Orders for the replica Apollo flight jacket have just begun through Alexander Leather Jackets in Scotland. " is a truly authentic copy of the clothing we wore during the Apollo days," Worden wrote. Fortunately, the zippers, studs and snaps were still available from the government contractor that produced the pieces for NASA. The jacket soft-goods sourced, the astronaut and attorney turned attention to the hardware. The Apollo flight jacket is "very flattering and distinctive and has many uses from driving or flying to leisure and golf." (STRS) "We couldn't find the original cloth material so we, at great expense, contracted a company to reproduce exactly the material in the jackets we wore," Worden said. They did the same for the jacket's lining, having the iconic flame-orange Rayon material recreated from scratch. The jacket's outer shell was fabricated from cotton thread, which Still The Right Stuff had dyed to the correct shade of blue and then sewn on correct-for-the-period machines using the same weave pattern as the vintage coats. "It soon became apparent that the material of the correct weave and quality was not available 'off the shelf,' so the Right Stuff team set about to solve that problem," Worden and Pidcock wrote.Īs vintage fabric for the jackets was no longer available, Worden and Pidcock had to have new material woven. With the help of some friends, Worden was able to source two of the original jackets for examination and patterning, including Apollo 7 astronaut Wally Schirra's jacket, which is displayed at the U.S. "The answer," Worden explained, "was to offer authentic Apollo-era flight jackets to a small but dedicated group of space enthusiasts."Īpollo 7 astronaut Wally Schirra's original NASA flight jacket, as seen on display the U.S. "What could we do to keep the flame of exploration foremost in the minds of people who care?" "Benzene contamination may occur in many alcohol spray applications, and in some alcohol or aloe vera-based lotions." "It's not an ingredient that is added to sunscreen, and likely, occurs as a contaminant, a byproduct of manufacturing, or in the production of another raw material, like alcohol or aloe vera," explains Laura Cohen, M.D., a board-certified dermatologic surgeon serving as President and CEO of CoLabs International. So how did benzene end up in sunscreen then? Current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) literature suggests that benzene exposure can happen involuntarily around you on a daily basis, but Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials have imposed a limit of two parts per million (2 ppm) in all pharmaceuticals, including sunscreen, to ensure it doesn't become an active ingredient. The chemical is also found in gasoline and is discharged into the air via exhaust pipes as well as in volcanic eruptions and forest fires. Benzene is typically harnessed in manufacturing plastics, synthetic fibers, dyes, detergents, as well as pesticides and also within glues and other adhesives as a solvent. While many manufacturers (including Johnson & Johnson) have issued recalls, you may be wondering if your bottle of sunscreen is affected by benzene contamination - and why exactly it's a risk to your health in the first place. And yet benzene contamination seems to be a more common health issue than ever expected, as independent testing by Valisure, a pharmaceutical analytical services company, published the results of its study citing more than 50 contaminated sunscreen products. ![]() How did benzene - a chemical compound that's naturally found in crude oil and gasoline - end up in sunscreen? Experts and manufacturers were shocked to find it in sample tests: It's not an intended ingredient in any sunscreen formula or production process, regardless of the brand or manufacturer. Customers were asked to dispose of or request a refund for the affected bottles immediately in "an abundance of caution" while the company investigated how a known carcinogenic chemical known as benzene worked its way into these aerosol products. Earlier this summer, Johnson & Johnson officials issued a voluntary recall for four different varieties of Neutrogena sunscreen products as well as one of its Aveeno sprays. Total Metabolic Rate, or TMR, is the cumulative energy required to maintain essential life functions as well as all physical activity, everything from grocery shopping to a strenuous workout. Resting Metabolic Rate, or RMR, is the rate at which the body expends energy to maintain essential life functions while at rest, but can include the act of digestion or recent physical activity.( 3) RMR measurements will be slightly higher than BMR measurements. Your actual BMR is affected by many factors, as stated above. While you can calculate an estimated BMR using a BMR calculator (which utilizes the following formulas or accepted variations), calculations are only estimates. Other factors affecting Basal Metabolic Rate include the total surface area of the body (higher surface area requires higher BMR to maintain body temperature), the presence of a fever or other physical stressors (which can raise BMR), fasting or starvation (both reduce BMR), smoking and caffeine (both increase BMR), sleep (reduces BMR), and emotional stress (increases BMR). Individuals with normal to elevated thyroxine levels (as found in hyperthyroidism) experience higher BMR than those with reduced thyroxine levels (as found in hypothyroidism). The hormone thyroxine, produced in the thyroid, directly impacts BMR. For this reason, men tend to have higher BMR than women based on average body composition.( 2) Those with high body fat have a much lower BMR because fatty tissue requires very little energy to be maintained. Individuals with higher lean body mass-meaning more muscle-have a higher BMR than those without, as muscle requires significant energy to be maintained. ![]() As we age, our BMR slows as our body shifts from an anabolic (building) state to a catabolic (breaking-down) state. Remember that cheeseburger, fries, and milkshake that ‘magically disappears’ when a teenager eats it? This is why. Children and adolescents generally have a very high BMR because their bodies are in a constant state of growth, which requires a constant supply of food in order to gain energy. Most notable are age, body shape, body composition, and hormones. On average, this sum is approximately 60-70% of a person's total daily energy expenditure.īecause BMR measures these activities while at complete rest, a true calculation of BMR can only be done after a 12-hour fast and a good night's rest and in the absence of any physical activity or emotional excitement, as these factors can temporarily influence metabolic rate. A BMR calculator measures the sum of kilocalories required to maintain these essential body functions. The majority of these essential functions continue mostly unnoticed-things like the heart beating, the lungs inhaling and exhaling air, the kidneys filtering waste, new cell creation, maintaining proper body temperature, and more. Understanding your BMR may help you determine how best to eat for your body type, and using a BMR calculator is an easy way to find this number.īut better yet, understanding what a BMR calculator is actually measuring and knowing how to change your BMR might get you one step closer to your fitness goals.īasal Metabolic Rate, known as BMR, is the rate at which the body expends energy to maintain essential life functions while at complete rest.
